Health insurance in your first week: what to confirm

A practical first-week checklist for health insurance and employer communication after moving to Germany.

Moving day produces enough small decisions. Health cover becomes easier to manage when you separate what must be confirmed from what can wait.

Confirm your effective date

Ask the relevant health insurance fund to confirm when membership begins and what evidence it sends to your employer. Keep the response with your employment records. Do not assume that submitting an online form means every step is complete.

Check what your employer needs

Payroll commonly needs the name of your statutory health fund and other onboarding details. Ask for the employer’s own deadline, especially if your first payroll run is close to your start date.

Keep a simple contact record

Write down the date, organisation, contact channel, and result of each conversation. Store confirmation letters, but avoid sending medical information to an employer unless a legitimate process specifically requires it.

Leave comparison decisions enough space

Public and private cover have different eligibility rules and long-term consequences. If your circumstances make both routes appear possible, seek qualified individual advice rather than making the choice under moving-week pressure.
